Cardano’s ecosystem continues to grow with measurable gains across development, activity, and governance. There are now 1,998 projects building on the network, with 1.33 million delegated wallets. The network has reached 109.18 million transactions, a 0.18% increase since last week, while native token activity remains strong with 10.78 million native tokens and 214,153 token policies.

Smart contract development also continues its upward trend. There are now 132,771 Plutus scripts and 6,587 Aiken scripts deployed, reflecting a 0.65% increase since last week. Governance is steadily expanding, with 1,292 DReps, including 956 actively participating, marking a 0.78% rise. Developer activity remains solid, with 238 GitHub commits recorded over the period.

CORE TECHNOLOGY

This week, the performance and tracing team released benchmarks for node v.10.4.1, including focused evaluations of UTXO-HD, GC settings, and socket I/O features. On the development side, the team abstracted over quick and trace queries to enable remote query processing. They also merged workbench simplification and resolved long-standing GHC8.10 technical debt. Additionally, the team implemented a hotfix to address several issues in the new tracing metrics.

The ledger team began preparations for an intra-era hard fork by adding Conway-era support for protocol version 11. They also continued reducing technical debt, tightening code-safety measures, and further enhancing the constraint-based testing framework.

WALLETS AND SERVICES

Lace wallet now fully supports Firefox with the release of version 1.22.1. This update allows users to manage ada, explore DApps, and use Bitcoin within the Lace environment on the Firefox browser, enhancing accessibility and flexibility.

SCALING

This week, the Mithril team released the new distribution 2517.1, which addresses a client security issue discussed in this developer blog post. This version supports Cardano node v.10.3.1 and allows for signing ancillary files in the Cardano database snapshots using an IOG key. It also includes various bug fixes and improvements.

The team continued progressing on the DMQ node implementation by adjusting the cadence of the signer and aggregator state machines and developing the delayer and retrier decorators to support multiple signature publishers in the signer.

Finally, they worked on fixing some bugs in the infrastructure and kept refactoring the STM cryptographic library for improved clarity.

VOLTAIRE 

Voting in the Intersect committee elections closed this week, with results to be announced at noon UTC on May 12.

The next elections will be for the Cardano constitutional committee. This committee is a Cardano committee, not an Intersect one. Candidate registrations opened on May 5 and will close at noon UTC on May 31.

Cardano builds on Bitcoin's unspent transaction output (UTXO) model, enhancing it for smart contracts and complex applications without sacrificing security or simplicity. This advanced version, extended UTXO (EUTXO), offers significant benefits for developers and users.

In his recent video, Charles Hoskinson highlighted the model’s power:

‘When you look at EUTXO, it’s really hand-in-glove built for isomorphism between the off-chain and on-chain. In other words, equality between these two.’

Understanding EUTXO through a simple analogy

Think of a Bitcoin wallet as a jar filled with individual coins, each being a UTXO of a specific value. In this example, let's assume there are two coins – UTXOs – in the jar, with these values: $50 and $20. If a user wants to make a purchase worth $30, they will pay $50 and get $20 in return (similar to what you would get when buying something in a shop). 

This $20 (the 'change') is the new UTXO to be added to the jar, and can be spent on another purchase. A Bitcoin (or Cardano) wallet merely contains a group of UTXOs (called the UTXO set), with the difference that Cardano extends the UTXO concept by adding data and logic, enabling much more versatile and functional UTXOs well beyond value representation.

Why EUTXO matters

Cardano’s EUTXO model offers several key benefits:

Deterministic smart contracts: users know exactly what a smart contract will do before it executes. The outcome of a transaction depends on its inputs, not on the global state of the blockchain. This predictability builds trustworthy and reliable decentralized applications (DApps).

Bitcoin decentralized finance (DeFi): EUTXO can facilitate interaction between Bitcoin and Cardano’s DeFi platforms thanks to the model’s complex smart contract capabilities. Among a number of ecosystem players, Input | Output is working on harnessing this interoperability.

Predictable fees and outcomes: there are no surprise costs and unpredictable ‘gas wars.’ Users can calculate the fees required for a valid transaction beforehand.

Parallel execution potential: EUTXO potentially permits multiple transactions to process simultaneously, significantly boosting scalability. Because transactions only depend on their inputs, they can, in principle, validate in parallel without interfering with each other.  This will be exploited in future Cardano protocol updates.

Easier testing and verification: the model’s deterministic nature makes it easier to test and verify smart contracts. Formal methods and off-chain simulation can ensure that DApps are safe, secure, and function as intended before deployment to mainnet.

EUTXO v account-based models

Unlike account-based models, where assets reside in accounts and the state of the blockchain can change during transaction validation, EUTXO offers a more predictable and secure environment. In the Cardano EUTXO model, users can check the validity of a transaction off-chain before sending it to the blockchain. A transaction can still fail if another transaction concurrently consumes an input that the transaction expects, but if all inputs are still present, the transaction is guaranteed to succeed. This predictability reduces the risk of loss and adversarial behavior.

The Cardano ecosystem shows sustained activity and gradual growth across key metrics. The number of projects building on the platform has reached 1,997, while 1.33 million delegated wallets indicate ongoing user engagement. The network has processed 108.98 million transactions, a 0.23% increase.

Asset activity has also increased, with 10.78 million native tokens issued under 213,259 token policies. Development activity includes 131,917 Plutus scripts and 6,507 Aiken scripts, signifying growing smart contract deployment. Governance participation remains strong with 1,282 DReps, 954 of which are active (up 1.66%). Development momentum is further evidenced by 259 GitHub commits, highlighting continuous contributions to the Cardano codebase.

Bodega Market has partnered with Sundial to build what they aim to be Bitcoin’s first prediction market.

TapTools has launched the Cardano Builder DAO, a smart contract-governed funding mechanism to support builders in the Cardano ecosystem.

Metera mainnet is now officially live, enabling users to trade indexes on Cardano.

CORE TECHNOLOGY

This week, the consensus team updated its centralized chain-sync-jumping model to act as a drop-in/stand-in for the real model, simplifying troubleshooting of property-test failures. They also joined the Cardano Foundation’s Antithesis workstream to widen node test coverage and robustness, and enriched the db-immutaliser so it can inspect entries in VolatileDB.

The team released Node v.10.4.1-pre-release, which introduces the production-ready UTXO-HD backend (in-memory by default; LMDB for experimental use). Benchmarks show no network impact, a slight CPU reduction, and only a small heap increase (~2% to 5%), which remains below pre-10.3 levels thanks to earlier memory optimizations.

WALLETS AND SERVICES

This week,  Lace took a major step towards broader accessibility and versatility with the release ofLace v.1.22. This update introduces support for the Firefox browser, rolls out Bitcoin integration (beta), and includes various performance enhancements to provide a smoother Web3 experience. SMART CONTRACTS

This week, strictness analysis was added to both UPLC and PIR, enabling optimizations that combine call-site inlining with safe strictification of bindings—reducing computational cost and script size. 

In preparation for the next hard fork, the team finalized the dropList specification, completed conformance testing for builtin arrays, and advanced work on Boolean casing and costing for the modular-exponentiation primitive, both slated for completion soon. On certified compilation, test coverage has expanded, several decision-procedure issues were fixed, and work continues on the remaining recently identified problems.

SCALING

The Hydra team has released v.0.21.0, a major update that includes numerous changes and enhancements. The focus now shifts to supporting the Glacier Drop, adding a Blockfrost-based chain layer, and resolving existing bugs in the incremental-commit workflow, which is still in beta until these issues are fixed. Additionally, ongoing daily improvements will continue to be made.

The Mithril team released the pre-release version of the 2517.0-pre distribution. This version supports Cardano node v.10.3.1 and allows for signing ancillary files in the Cardano database snapshots using an IOG key. It also includes various bug fixes and improvements. The team continued implementing incremental certification for the Cardano database, also known as Cardano node database v2, which has been activated on the release-preprod test network.

The team has completed the proof of concept for the Mithril/ALBA aggregation proof system. They also simplified the configuration of the aggregator's commands and improved the dependency injection process. In addition, they implemented a publisher abstraction to facilitate the publication of signatures in the signer.

Finally, the team focused on speeding up the compilation time of Rust nodes and libraries while continuing to refactor the STM cryptographic library for improved clarity.

The Cardano ecosystem continues to grow steadily, as evidenced by several key indicators. The number of projects building on the network has reached 1,993.

Token activity also remains strong, with 10.77 million native tokens issued and 212,489 token policies, a 0.22% increase since the last update. Smart contract adoption continues to grow, with 131,015 Plutus scripts and 6,492 Aiken scripts now deployed. The total number of transactions processed on the network stands at 108.73 million. 

On the governance side, 1,261 DReps are registered, including 935 actively participating, reflecting a 0.49% increase since last week in decentralized representation.

CORE TECHNOLOGY

This week, the ledger team addressed technical debt to prepare for future era definitions, improved CI and tests, and added a duplicate-transaction check to the MEMPOOL rule to short-circuit processing when duplicates are detected. Additionally, the team completed integration work for the upcoming node v.10.3.0 release.

The core technology teams released node v.10.3.1 pre-release, which primarily focuses on performance improvements, increasing execution speed, reducing memory usage, and providing faster synchronization times. Additionally, it offers several enhancements to the new tracing system, and provides support for lightweight checkpointing, which is necessary to enable ouroboros-genesis.

SCALING

This week, the Mithril team focused on signing ancillary files in the Cardano database snapshots using an IOG key and on the proof of concept for the Mithril/ALBA aggregation proof system. They also worked on simplifying the aggregator’s command configuration and dependency injection. Additionally, they continued to refactor the STM cryptographic library to improve its clarity.

Finally, the team investigated a communication issue in the signer when the attached Cardano node is restarted, and worked on accelerating the compilation time of the Rust nodes and libraries.

The Leios team made progress on both the Haskell and Rust simulations, refined cost estimates, and completed detailed analyses of the transaction lifecycle and Full Leios runs. The Haskell simulation now includes a first draft of new mini-protocols for Leios diffusion, covering IB/EB relays, vote relays, fetch protocols, and a Catch-Up protocol for older blocks. The short-leios command was also renamed to leios (with an alias retained for compatibility). On the Rust side, the shared trace format now conforms, a voting-logic bug has been fixed, and visualizations have been updated for smaller trace files. Additionally, the team made revisions to the cost-dashboard, worked on the analysis of the transaction lifecycle, and Full Leios simulations, covering 648 scenarios of Full and Short Leios implementations with varied parameters.

コアテクノロジー

Ouroboros Leios: the next leap in scalability

CORE TECHNOLOGY

This week, the consensus team made progress on the Genesis tests by developing a centralized chain-sync-jumping model for troubleshooting. This model proved to be more effective than the previously used approach. They also initiated collaboration with the Ouroboros Phalanx anti-grinding innovation team as an initial step to provide engineering input on the design.

The networking team continued work on the transaction submission feature and are currently analyzing a test failure before merging the pull request. Additionally, Armando Santos from Well-Typed opened a draft pull request (ouroboros-network#5109) to implement the DMQ node, and the teams are collaborating on it. Finally, they are reviewing a pull request focused on inbound governor performance improvements.

The performance and tracing team focused on benchmarking node v.10.3.1. They also progressed with updates to the Plutus script calibration tool and profile maintenance and are about to merge a workbench simplification in terms of infrastructure improvements. The team also addressed system dependencies and are preparing the 'periodic tracer' feature for production.

Finally, several core technology team members attended the node diversity workshop last week — see this report for a detailed overview.

SMART CONTRACTS

This week, the Plutus team delivered several improvements to Plinth (formerly Plutus Tx). Compiler enhancements include a new inline-callsite-growth flag that allows developers to set an inlining threshold (0 disables growth; n permits inlining if the AST expands by ≤ n nodes). Additionally, PlutusTx.Lift.liftCode now applies default PIR and UPLC optimizations during code lifting, which yields leaner on-chain scripts. Library upgrades include a new PlutusTx.BuiltinList module, expanded helpers in PlutusTx.Data.List (for example, destructList, caseList, caseList'), and additional utilities in PlutusTx.Data.AssocMap. Two new user-guide sections explain lifting values into CompiledCode and Compile-Time evaluation.

Plutus Core work for the next hard fork continued: costing, conformance testing, and metatheory for the dropList primitive; costing plus metatheory for built-in arrays and modular exponentiation; a review of the CIP on built-in value; and exploration of pattern-matching on built-in types. The team also added tests to the certifier and addressed the issues revealed during the certified compilation effort.

SCALING

This week, the Hydra team enabled the withdraw‑zero trick, published snapshot side‑loading documentation, and fixed several deposit‑related bugs (1, 2, 3). 

The team is now preparing the next major release, which will feature a Blockfrost‑based chain layer and Glacier‑drop support.

The Mithril team started rolling out incremental certification of the Cardano database (also known as Cardano node database v2), which has been activated on the pre-release-preview test network.

They also completed adapting the infrastructure to support the aggregator’s prototype ‘follower’ mode and focused on signing ancillary files in the Cardano database snapshots using an IOG key. Work also continued on the proof of concept for the Mithril/ALBA aggregation proof system.

Finally, the team continued refactoring the STM cryptographic library to improve clarity and started refactoring the aggregator’s command configuration.

The Leios team continued refining the protocol and its simulations. In the Haskell simulation, they began specifying a new relay protocol for IB header diffusion without the body, and improved the shared log format by removing redundancies and harmonizing naming conventions. They also added support for additional events – including SlotEvent and NoBlockEvent – which can be enabled via the --conformance-events flag in conjunction with --shared-log-format. Meanwhile, they updated the Rust simulation to match the new standardized trace format and resolved a critical bug in CPU scheduling that allowed nodes to exceed their allocated cores.

The team also streamlined workflow optimization for both Haskell and Rust simulations. They replaced MongoDB with more efficient jq map-reduce queries, created reusable library functions for plotting with R, and revised scripts to simplify creation, execution, and analysis of simulations. A more generic and reusable Jupyter notebook further accelerates analysis turnaround times. These enhancements were successfully tested on the leios-2025w15 tag, revealing several discrepancies between the two simulations that have been documented as GitHub issues for future investigation.

VOLTAIRE

CATALYST

This week, the Catalyst team continued to emphasize the Horizons report and engage the community through X Spaces discussions around the 2025 budget proposal released last week. The team also participated in the Blockchain4Good virtual summit, where human-centered technology met sustainable development.

The regular Catalyst town hall on X took place on Wednesday at 5 PM UTC. Ongoing content efforts include a soon-to-be-launched ‘Before and After’ impact series and new ‘Under The Hood’ episodes. The technical development of the Catalyst stack remains a primary focus.

EDUCATION

This week, the education team is planning further Cardano Days sessions as part of the Cardano community Azteca 2025 event in Mexico and at the National Technical University of Athens in Athens, Greece. They are also creating content for various modules of the Midnight Pioneer program and are updating the Cardano developer course.

ECOSYSTEM UPDATES

Cardano's ecosystem continues to progress with steady growth across technical, governance, and community fronts. There are now 1,990 projects building on the platform, alongside 1.33 million delegated wallets, reflecting stable engagement in staking. The network has processed over 108.36 million transactions, a 0.24% increase since the last update, while native token activity reached 10.75 million tokens and 211,632 token policies.

On the smart contract side, 130,282 Plutus scripts and 6,217 Aiken scripts have been deployed. Governance also continues to grow, with 1,238 DReps, including 930 active DReps, indicating a 0.65% rise in participation since last week.

This week, Input | Output (IO) attended Paris Blockchain Week, where teams explored the latest innovations, collaborated on emerging opportunities, and took meaningful steps to advance the ecosystem.

Charles Hoskinson, IO CEO, delivered the opening keynote on day two of Paris Blockchain Week. He spoke about the fourth generation of cryptocurrencies, highlighting the growing importance of blockchain infrastructure in today’s rapidly changing digital and economic landscape.

He also joined Midnight CEO Eran Barak for a fireside chat on Midnight’s vision and its significance for the broader Web3 landscape.

The week also featured a dedicated node diversity workshop, bringing together developers from across the Cardano ecosystem to share ideas and foster collaboration.

Node diversity workshop

At the start of Paris Blockchain Week, a group of Cardano node developers gathered at the Tweag offices in the city for a node diversity workshop. Over three days, from April 7 to 9, participants from the Cardano Foundation, Harmonic Labs, IO Engineering, Sundae Labs, Tweag, TxPipe, and other affiliations shared recent successes, exchanged new insights, and collaborated to address ongoing challenges.



Using the Open Space Technology workshop format, 25 participants set their agenda after an introductory session focused on sharing expectations. In total, around 25 sessions took place across up to three concurrent tracks. Topics ranged from demonstrations, status updates, and experience reports to Q\&A sessions on new Cardano node implementations and tools — including a look at testing practices in Ethereum. Other sessions focused on upcoming features, such as Leios, and on building consensus around client interfaces, file formats, and test vectors. A recurring theme was the importance of sharing knowledge through CIPs and the newer Cardano Blueprint initiative. Attendees identified the next steps for drafting CIPs and blueprints as outcomes of these discussions.

Judging by feedback from the closing sessions, the workshop was a resounding success. Participants appreciated the open exchange of ideas, with organizational hierarchies fading during lively discussions. A full report, including session proceedings, will be published soon. In the meantime, a dedicated Discord channel serves as interim forum for ongoing collaboration on node diversity.

Eternl wallet has released a new version featuring a redesigned UI, multi-sig support, and additional improvements.

zkFold has launched ‘Smart Wallet’, an all-in-one API library for implementing a Cardano wallet.

CORE TECHNOLOGY

The ledger team tackled major technical debt items over the past two weeks. They finalized the adjustment of how original transaction bytes are retained during deserialization, a step crucial for the upcoming nested transactions feature. They completed changes to CertState for better clarity between pre- v post-Conway eras. The team also introduced a minor performance boost for transaction size calculations, made the MemoBytes interface safe, and renamed AccountState to ChainAccountState to pave the way for future Leios-related expansions.

Beyond these structural changes, the team simplified the constraint-based generation framework, fixed example Plutus scripts in the testing pipeline, and removed redundant Byron test packages. This cleanup reduces overhead and duplication, contributing to a more maintainable ledger codebase overall. They also introduced new features in testing, updated the specification code location, and continued refining infrastructure by converting Byron test packages into sublibraries and exposing Byron CDDLs for easier downstream usage.

SCALING 

This week, some members of the Mithril team attended a workshop on the Cardano node diversity in Paris. They also continued adapting the infrastructure to support the aggregator’s prototype ‘follower’ mode and focused on signing ancillary files in the Cardano database snapshots with an IOG key. Additionally, they completed the implementation for recording the origin of requests made to the aggregator API.

Finally, the team continued refactoring the STM cryptographic library to improve clarity and maintainability and started implementing a proof of concept for the Mithril/ALBA aggregation proof system.

The Leios team held an in-person workshop in Edinburgh to refine their protocol and simulation capabilities, making progress on several aspects. 

On day one, they discussed ledger design, trade-offs, and linking formal specifications to simulations, exploring options like labeled UTXOs and accounts, and addressing fees and conflict prevention. They also reviewed conformance testing approaches.

On day two, they estimated the costs of running a Leios node, analyzing resource usage across TPS levels, from 10 TPS to 1k TPS. They found that while overhead is significant at low throughput, efficiency improves at higher levels. Some cost items, like IOPS and memory cost, remain to be finalized this month.

On the final day, the team narrowed down options for optimistic validation of input blocks, defining three candidates and favoring one. Their goal was to enable transaction chaining within Leios by determining a 'point in time' for subsequent transactions based on local knowledge of input blocks.

Cardano’s ecosystem continues to grow. The number of projects building on the network has increased to 1,991. Delegated wallets have also grown to 1.329 million, reflecting consistent user participation in staking.

The platform now hosts 10.77 million native tokens and 211,292 token policies, up 0.38% and 0.14% since last week, respectively. Smart contract deployment remains active with 130,036 Plutus scripts. The network has now processed 108.10 million transactions, and 1,230 DReps (including 927 active DReps) are currently involved in governance, highlighting a 0.49% rise in DRep since the previous week.

CORE TECHNOLOGY

This week, the performance and tracing team conducted preliminary benchmarks on node v.10.3, comparing GHC8 and GHC9 compilers, scaling Plutus budgets, and tuning runtime parameters under GHC9. Development efforts included creating a new Plutus script calibration tool and updating benchmarking profiles for maintenance. On the infrastructure side, the team adjusted tooling to align with the latest Cardano API and made significant progress simplifying the performance workbench. Additionally, the team tested new tracing enhancements in mainnet metrics monitoring and introduced a generalized Nix service configuration for cardano-tracer.

The consensus team collaborated with Well-Typed, who presented the penultimate milestone for the lsm-tree library. The library now supports table unions with I/O error injection and is compatible with Linux, Windows, and macOS. Once finalized, it will serve as a persistent backend for storing ledger states.

Additionally, several consensus team members attended the Peras workshop, where they participated in a presentation and discussed a design and implementation plan. The next steps involve making decisions in the Intersect technical steering committee regarding protocol trade-offs, such as operational costs, rewards, and parameterization related to settlement times.

During the technical working group meeting, attendees discussed the incorporation of batch VRF support into oroboros-consensus and considered a draft pull request for a CDDL definition. They also reviewed support for older-era NTC, exposed a function allowing consensus to provide versions for specific queries, revealed Byron CDDLs from the consensus, and added QueryStakePoolDefaultVote for node v.10.3.

SCALING

This week, the Hydra team concentrated on bug fixes and investigations and added a feature to help ‘un-stuck’ a Hydra head through side-loading snapshots. Documentation for this feature is underway, and future work includes merging additional bug fixes and implementing a ‘Withdraw 0’ trick for custom Plutus operations on layer 2, ensuring users can still fan out.

They also introduced an \`--advertise option\` to bind nodes to public IPs, investigated mirror node behavior, and fixed a memory-related bug to further enhance reliability and performance.

The Mithril team released the 2513.0 distribution, which supports Cardano node v.10.2.1 and includes various bug fixes and improvements.

They continued adapting the infrastructure to support the aggregator’s prototype ‘follower’ mode and focused on signing ancillary files in the Cardano database snapshots with an IOG key. They also worked on recording the origin of requests made to the aggregator API.

Finally, the team updated the CIP-0137 mini-protocols and implementation plan and kept refactoring the STM cryptographic library for improved clarity and maintainability.

CATALYST

The technical development of the native Catalyst app is progressing steadily. This week will see the release of a new episode of ‘Under The Hood’, providing deeper insights into Catalyst’s journey. 

Additionally, the Catalyst town hall was live on X, fostering engagement with the community. Catalyst also participated in the CV Labs Crypto Valley London Mixer, where the team shared their vision and connected with industry leaders.

EDUCATION

This week, the education team hosted a successful Cardano Days event at Florida International University as part of their Code Crunch event. Participants learned about blockchain fundamentals, received an introduction to Cardano and Ouroboros, and took part in an interactive learning session on how to run stake pools and nodes. 

Additionally, the team focused on creating content for the first two modules of the Midnight Pioneer program and completed more Haskell Bootcamp lectures.

SCALING

This week, the Mithril team created the pre-release for the \`2513.0-pre\` distribution, which provides support for Cardano node v.10.2.1 and includes various bug fixes and improvements.

They implemented the aggregator's prototype ‘slave’ mode to support signer registration across multiple aggregators and started adapting the infrastructure to support it. They also focused on signing ancillary files in the Cardano database snapshots with an IOG key and worked on recording the origin of requests made to the aggregator API.

Finally, the team enhanced the handling of some aggregator functional errors to improve signer metrics accuracy and kept refactoring the cryptographic library for better clarity and maintainability.

The Leios team made significant progress in protocol development, focusing on improving simulation capabilities and analyzing protocol behavior under various network conditions. A comparison of Haskell and Rust simulations across 18 scenarios demonstrated that the Leios protocol scales effectively to mainnet-sized networks. However, congestion occurs when the input block rate reaches 30 IB/s.

CATALYST

CORE TECHNOLOGY

This week, the core technology teams released node v.10.2.1, which introduces support for the new tracing system and initial integration of Ouroboros Genesis – a new feature that enables nodes to bootstrap from the network. It also provides a number of bug fixes and enhancements, including improvements to a number of CLI commands.

This week, the consensus team published an overview of adding Ouroboros Genesis to the existing Cardano implementation of Ouroboros Praos. They also fixed a chain sync jumping test, introduced minor improvements, merged a first draft describing era transition governance, and added a new full block diagram for further clarity.

The SRE team continues to enhance Cardano environments and perform general maintenance. Recent updates include cleaning and optimizing the cardano-node flake closure, resulting in approximately an 18% reduction in size. Additionally, they merged improvements to OCI images, which will be included in the next cardano-node release. The Nix Hydra machine for building cardano-node now runs on upgraded hardware, increasing development CI concurrency. Initial investigations into the long evaluation times in the Nix CI suggest that significant improvements can be achieved in the near future.

WALLETS AND SERVICES

The Lace wallet is expanding its capabilities by becoming multichain, starting with Bitcoin. This allows Lace users to store, manage, and interact with bitcoin directly from their wallet. This week, the Mithril team continued working on the aggregator's prototype 'slave' mode to support signer registration across multiple aggregators. This feature is being stabilized and tested. Finally, the team refined both simulation implementations for greater realism and comparability, while the formal methods team developed initial trace verification tools for Short Leios.

The ledger team continued reducing technical debt by restructuring how stake is computed, removing Ptr from stake distribution calculations in the Conway era, and making various minor serialization fixes and failure-reporting improvements. Performance optimization often comes down to identifying subtle inefficiencies in the generated code. While reviewing the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC) Core of the production evaluator, the Input | Output (IO) Plutus team discovered that a key function, safeIndexOne, was not getting inlined and was introducing unnecessary laziness. By addressing strictness issues, eliminating redundant data structures, and leveraging the worker-wrapper transformation, the team achieved a 12% performance improvement.

This post, written by Roman Kireev – IO’s compiler engineer, describes the optimization process, detailing how the team turned recursive lookups into efficient jump-based execution.

Identifying optimization opportunities

While analyzing the GHC Core output of the evaluator, the team noticed the following snippet:



This code performs a variable lookup using safeIndexOne. If the lookup fails, the evaluator terminates via jump exit\_X16. Otherwise, recursion continues with the looked-up value using jump returnCek\_scPkh.

In both cases, the jump keyword indicates that recursion compiles to an efficient jump to a label. For more details, see the ‘Compiling without Continuations’ research paper.

Several optimization opportunities stood out:

safeIndexOne is not inlined – its presence in the Core suggests that GHC isn’t inlining it

Unnecessary boxing of indices – the in-scope variable index bx18\_scPRb is wrapped with W64#, indicating that safeIndexOne is lazier than necessary

Avoidable Maybe construction – safeIndexOne returns a Maybe, which is immediately deconstructed, adding unnecessary overhead.

Addressing strictness issues

Examining safeIndexOne, we see:



The first clause ignores the second argument, leading GHC to treat it as lazy. This causes the W64# wrapping seen earlier. To enforce strict evaluation, we modify the function:



After recompiling, we see that the strictness issue is resolved:



Now, $wsafeIndexOne (see The Worker/Wrapper Transformation research paper) operates directly on a machine word value, eliminating unnecessary boxing and unboxing.

Attempting inlining through worker-wrapper transformation

However, safeIndexOne is still not inlined. Since it is recursive, GHC won’t inline it by default. We attempt a manual worker-wrapper transformation to create a non-recursive top-level function:



However, this does not solve the issue – GHC floats go to the top level, preventing inlining.

Ensuring inlining with Church encoding

We need to ensure that GHC retains go and indexTree as local definitions. When safeIndexOne is inlined, both appear in the generated Core at the call site, allowing GHC to optimize them. This could likely be achieved using something from GHC.Magic, but the simplest approach is to make safeIndexOne accept a term-level argument and use it within go and indexTree. To do this, we introduce a term-level argument by Church-encoding Maybe:



Now, z replaces Nothing, and f replaces Just. The call site is adapted from:

This allows safeIndexOne to inline, along with its internals.

Result: optimized Core output

The final Core output shows a recursive join point with efficient machine word operations and label jumps:



Conclusion

By enforcing strict evaluation, restructuring safeIndexOne, and leveraging Church encoding, we eliminated unnecessary boxing, ensured inlining, and improved evaluator performance by 12%.

Performance tuning in Haskell: optimizing the Plutus evaluator

Cardano's ecosystem continues to expand with incremental growth in key metrics. The number of projects building on the network has increased to 1,987, while 1.324 million delegated wallets actively participate in staking. The issuance of native tokens has reached 10.70 million, with 208,410 token policies.

Smart contract activity is also progressing, with 127,114 Plutus scripts deployed, marking a 0.53% increase since last week. On-chain transactions have risen to 108.80 million, a 2.17% increase since last week, indicating steady network usage. Governance participation remains active, with 1,147 decentralized representatives (DReps), reflecting continued engagement in Cardano's decentralized decision-making process.

CORE TECHNOLOGY

The performance and tracing team conducted Plinth memory budget scaling benchmarks, UTXO-HD benchmarks to address a fixed regression, and Ouroboros Genesis benchmarks. They adjusted Ouroboros Genesis and UTXO-HD within the workbench and completed various maintenance tasks. On the infrastructure side, they removed outdated deployments, merged the Haskell profile definition, and continued simplifying the workbench. Meanwhile, C library development for trace forwarding remains ongoing, with feature implementation guided by community feedback, and the team has begun testing the removal of the old tracing system.

This week, the ledger team tackled technical debt by improving the entrypoint interface that consensus uses to interact with the ledger, reorganizing parts of the ledger state for a more type-safe distinction of changes introduced in the Conway era, and implementing alternative deserialization for on-chain types to enable faster, more accurate decoders in downstream components.

WALLETS AND SERVICES

Daedalus v.7.1.0 has been released as a security and maintenance update, ensuring compatibility with the Plomin hard fork and improving overall performance and stability. Notable updates include upgrading cardano-node to v.10.1.4 and cardano-wallet to v.2025-01-09 to address potential denial of service vulnerabilities post-Plomin. The release also provides CIP-129 DRep ID support, aligning Daedalus with the new on-chain governance features, and resolves a dynamic library loading issue on older macOS (10.15.x) systems.

SCALING

This week, the Mithril team continued implementing incremental certification of the Cardano database, focusing on feature stabilization and production readiness. They also worked on supporting the Cardano node v.10.2 and documenting the certification process for each certifiable data type.

Finally, the team completed cleaning up legacy code from the 'Thales' era and started working on a slave mode for the aggregator signer registration.

This week in Leios development, CPS-0018 for improved transaction throughput was approved, along with improved Docker support for simulations and analysis of cross-simulation results. The team also examined input block production rates and their impact on network performance.

VOLTAIRE 

Excitement is building as the time approaches for the second Intersect committee elections. Now that the community shapes the future of Cardano, all ada holders are encouraged to get involved in governance by joining Intersect and volunteering to be a member of a standing committee.

Candidacy applications will be open from March 17 to March 31, and voting will take place in April. To maintain continuity and corporate knowledge, only half the membership of each committee will be replaced every six-monthly election.

Catalyst has launched a new video series, Under the Hood, to promote transparency and provide insights into behind-the-scenes activities, while the Catalyst town hall is now live on X, engaging the community in real-time discussions. The team has introduced a community poll to gather input on topics for the next X Space. Meanwhile, the onboarding of Fund13 is ongoing, alongside the continued development of tooling and infrastructure in preparation for Fund14 changes.

EDUCATION

This week, the education team are making progress with various refactoring updates and enhancements to the Cardano developer course and are completing additional lectures for the Haskell Bootcamp. They are also outlining  a stake pool operator course and a Midnight zero-knowledge proofs course. Additionally, they are preparing for a virtual presentation about Cardano for the Doctoral Consortium at Universidad Latinoamericana y del Caribe, in Venezuela, later this month.
